Our Toddler Program

"An observant child should be put in the way of things worth observing" - Charlotte Mason

Toddlerhood marks a captivating and distinctive phase in a child's journey of discovery. During this period, children engage with the world around them through the use of their senses, embarking on a sensory exploration that involves touching, tasting, smelling, seeing, moving, and hearing. This sensory play isn't just about fun; it serves as a crucial foundation for various aspects of development. Through sensory experiences, toddlers support the growth of language skills, enhance cognitive abilities, refine fine and gross motor skills, sharpen problem-solving capabilities, and foster social interactions. As they immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of sensations, toddlers not only make sense of their surroundings but also lay the groundwork for a holistic and well-rounded developmental journey.

Our toddler program is mindfully designed for children 18 months - 30 months of age. With a maximum class size of 10 toddlers per two Registered Early Childhood Educators, we ensure a personalized, engaging, and supportive setting for optimal development.

At Ancaster Forest & Nature School, we are firm believers in the transformative power of real-life, nature-based sensory experiences for children. Whether it's harvesting fresh vegetables from our garden, measuring ingredients for delicious snacks, or embarking on explorations through acres of lush and diverse forest, we offer a sensory-rich environment that consistently connects children to and deepens their understanding of the natural world.

Connecting children to their natural world means that we are in our outdoor learning environments in the rain, snow, and sunshine, as much as possible. Our days are focused on following the children's interests and inquires, resulting in a fluid learning environment. Days are spent mostly outdoors, traversing acres of forest, which includes seasonal wetlands, cold-water streams, and an array of rare plants, birds, and wildlife.  Our engaging indoor learning environments are filled with developmentally appropriate, Canadian-made learning materials and provides an ideal setting to rest and recharge.

Children indulge their taste buds with our delicious and nutritious snacks, thoughtfully crafted by Wholesome Kids Catering. Our meticulously planned, vegetarian lunch is not just a meal—it's a shared experience designed with mindfulness and care. Served in a family-style approach, this unique dining setting goes beyond nourishment. It becomes a platform for children to develop essential self-help and social skills, encouraging a sense of pride and ownership in the food they relish. At Ancaster Forest & Nature School, we believe that the dining table is a place for more than just eating; it's an opportunity for connection, growth, and enjoyment. All snacks and meals are seamlessly included in our programs, ensuring that every child embarks on a wholesome and delightful culinary journey with us.

The foundations of best practices at Ancaster Forest & Nature School are underpinned by a robust framework informed by several research-based documents such as:

  • Forest and Nature School Canada: A Head, Heart, Hands Approach to Outdoor Learning (2014);
  • How Does Learning Happen? Ontario’s Pedagogy for the Early Years (2014);
  • Early Learning for Every Child Today: A Framework for Ontario Early Childhood Settings (2007);
  • Think Feel Act Document: Lessons for research about young children (2013);
  • Child Care and Early Years Act of Ontario (2014)

As the city of Hamilton is not entering any new child care agreements at this time, we are not able to participate in the Canada Wide Early Learning and Child Care program.
